Cord Cutters Rejoice as Watching the Olympics without Cable has Never Been Easier

It’s been an exciting week in Rio so far as cupping becomes the new Olympic fad, the pools mysteriously turn green, and USA continues to dominate in the swim lanes. Now that the work week’s over and the weekend is upon us, it’s time to sink in and catch all of the Olympic action; all without having to pay hundreds of dollars to the cable company.

If you love the Olympics but hate cable, stick around because we’re going to show you how to watch the Olympics without cable. And if you’ve already cut the cord, you should kick your feet up anyway because we’re also going to give you an in-depth guide of all the upcoming events this weekend.

Let’s get started!

What Channels are the Olympics on?

The 2016 Olympics will air on the following channels:  NBC, Telemundo, Bravo, CNBC, Golf Channel, MSNBC, NBC Sports Network (NBCSN), NBC UNIVERSO (Spanish language), USA Network, and two Specialty channels (Basketball and Soccer). As you notice, most of these are cable channels. Luckily, we still won’t need a cable subscription.

OTA

Regardless of whether you’re looking to watch the Olympics without cable or you just want to cut the cord, the first step you need to take is to get an over-the-air (OTA) antenna. An OTA antenna will give you free HD access to all of the major broadcast networks; such as ABC, CBS, and NBC.

You won’t get EVERY Olympic event on NBC, but you’ll get most of the important events; including the Closing Ceremonies.

PlayStation Vue and Sling TV

Both Sling TV and Playstation Vue are incredible resources for the 2016 Olympics. With Sling TV’s $25 a month Blue package, you can get access to  NBC Sports Network (NBCSN), Bravo, and USA. With that subscription you will also be able to live stream every event via the NBC Sports website and app.

For an additional $5 each, you get also get the World News Extra and the Sports Extra to give you the CNBC, MSNBC, and the Golf Channel.

Likewise, PlayStation Vue’s $30 Access will give  NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, and USA. For the Golf Channel, you just pay an extra $5 for the Core package.

Both Sling TV and PlayStation Vue come in at around the same price for the same amount of coverage, so which service you pick is up to you.

Select TV

If free is more your style, then you should really check out the Olympic coverage from Select TV. Select TV (from the makers of Rabbit TV) is an online streaming service that aggregates free online video into one convenient guide for $2.99 a month. Right now they have a special Olympic streaming guide set up that you can watch without a subscription.

There’s a nice guide that will allow you to see what live events are going on and multiple international sources to stream it from. Now some of those streams, like those from the BBC, will require you to be in that specific country, but that can be easily subverted using a VPN, which can change your “location” on the internet.

As always, there’s a slight risk that comes with using a VPN; but if free is  your idea of perfect, then check it out.
