Mohu Prepares For CES 2017

The Entertainment Capitol of the World is the site for the 50th Annual Consumer Technology Association’s Consumer Electronics Show.

Taking place January 5th-8th in Las Vegas, CES 2017 promises many new and exciting tech devices from companies around the globe.

Consumers who have cut the cord or who are considering breaking ties with their cable company can look forward to Mohu unveiling new cordcutter products at the upcoming show.

Recently winning the Best in Biz Awards 2016 Consumer Product of the Year Award, the Mohu ReLeaf HDTV Antenna is just one example of Mohu’s commitment to innovative, affordable cordcutter tech for all.

DirecTV Now Has A Rough Start

If you signed up for the new DirecTV Now streaming service, you may have already noticed a few hiccups in reliability.

Last week AT&T’s DirecTV Now service which launched November 30th, was suddenly unavailable to subscribers just as the service had started to pick up momentum and subscribers.

cordcutter chronicles DirecTV Now

The DirecTV Now outage came just two weeks after the launch of its streaming TV service that for a limited time offers initial subscribers the deal of 100 channels for $35 a month.

One thing that will get consumers to cancel the subscription fast, or avoid signing up in the first place, is if the experience of watching live TV over the internet doesn’t work as well as a cable box. Some are saying that the service launched too soon and that it’s still too expensive.

Time will tell if DirecTV Now can fix its technical issues and offer reliable service. If not, the outage may quickly become permanent.

Hulu Offers Customized User Profiles

This past week Hulu started allowing subscribers to make user profiles which allow up to 6 users sharing one Hulu account to get customized recommendations based upon their viewing history and manage their watchlist.

Arguably the best feature of this update to Hulu’s service is the ability for parents to setup kid’s profiles.  In doing so their children will only be offered family-friendly Hulu Kids viewing options.

While Kids profiles aren’t meant to be parental controls, they are a place for children to browse Hulu without accidentally running into mature content. A user with a Kids profile won’t be able to access Watchlist, search, recommendations, and auto-resume functions.

 Google Play 4K Movies

With the explosion of 4K ready TVs and streaming devices, there’s also been an increase in the availability of UHD (Ultra High Definition) 4K content.

The Google Play store’s Movie and TV service added 125 movies in 4K to their library last week.

Cordcutter Chronicles Google Play 4K

This comes as Google begins selling its 4K-ready Chromecast Ultra which at only $69 with 3 months of FREE HBO and one free UHD movie rental, is a pretty sweet deal!

The downside to obtaining 4K movies from Google Play is that while consumers can purchase and rent movies with any Android device that has the Google Play store app, the movies may not play on all devices.

Google has stated that all of the new titles are compressed via their own native VP9 4K video compression codec and while any title can be bought from almost any Android device or from the Play Movies site on the web, actual viewing of these new movies is possible only for consumers who own a 4K Chromecast Ultra stick, one of Sony’s 2015 or 2016 4K UHD TVs or a Xiaomi Mi Box 3.
