Cord Cutting Guide to Winter TV Premieres – February 2017 Edition

With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, what better way to express your love for television than to check out some of the great shows premiering or returning in the month of February? Believe it or not, this sometimes otherwise dull month is jam packed with a lot of great television this year; none of which requires a cable subscription.

Don’t believe me? Here’s a quick look at some of the highlights of what we’ve got in store for in February. And if you scroll down just a bit, you can check out the full premiere list for the month.

February Over-the-Air Premieres

February 1  – Arrow, The CW

Time to get your geek on as the show that started the DC television craze is coming back. For those of you unfamiliar, Arrow tells the story of Oliver Queen: a billionaire playboy by day, masked vigilante by night. It’s a great show regardless of whether or not you like comics; and you can always catch up on the show by watching the previous seasons on Netflix. Win win!

February 2 – Training Day, CBS

Yep, it’s exactly what you think it is. Training Day is the follow up series to the 2001 movie of the same. Although there is no Denzel Washington or Ethan Hawke in sight, this taut drama is produced and directed by Antoine Fuqua, the same man that made the movie. Set 15 years after the events of the film, it’s not entirely clear how the show and movie will be connected but that’s what mysteries are for.

Sunday, February 5 – Super Bowl LI, Fox

It’s the most watched television event of the year, and for good reason. The Super Bowl is the ultimate face-off between two of the best teams in the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots. Pick a side and tune in; because even if you’re not a huge football fan, it’s hard to ignore the glorious spectacle that is the Super Bowl.

Sunday, February 26 – 89th Academy Awards, ABC

We all make fun of it, we all complain about it, but deep down in our hearts we all know that the love the Academy Awards. Take a seat and put the champagne on ice, because no matter what year it is there is bound to be some sort of controversy that bubbles out. And who doesn’t want to see that?

February Streaming Premieres

January 27 – Z: The Beginning of Everything, Amazon

Okay, so technically this one was loaded into the Amazon Video queue last week, but… Flappers, jazz clubs, and rampant alcoholism; all of the wonderful hallmarks of the 1920’s is on display in Amazon’s new series: Z: The Beginning of Everything. The shows follows the life of Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of author F. Scott Fitzgerald. If you love the 20’s, American literature, or just want a drama that will suck you in; this is what you’re looking for.

February 3 – Santa Clarita Diet, Netflix

Sheila and Joel  (Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant) have the perfect life. Nice car, great job, great kids. But all of that gets turned upside down when Sheila inexplicably becomes undead and develops a craving for human flesh. How does her loving family react? By supporting and assisting her in her never-ending quest to consume the flesh of man? If this dark comedy doesn’t satisfy your hunger for grim humor, nothing will.

February 10 – David Brent: Life on the Road, Netflix (movie)

Unlike the American version, where you never really do get to find out what happens to everyone once The Office ends. David Brent: Life on the Road more or less catches up with everyone’s favorite middle manager, David Brent, 12 years after the series ended. Working as a traveling salesman, David is still full of delusions of grandeur and as cringe-worthy as ever.

February 12 – The Walking Dead, AMC (Sling TV, PlayStation Vue)

Nothing says I love you like bashing in the brains of a zombie. After an intolerable wait, The Walking Dead is back from its mid-season break and is ready to draw a close to another controversial season. Will Negan get his comeuppance or are we another season away? There’s only one way to find out.

February 14 – The Mindy Project, Hulu

Whether you’re all alone or with that special someone, The Mindy Project is the perfect prescription for your Valentine’s Day activities. Starring Mindy Kaling (perhaps best known as Kelly Kapoor from The Office), this well written show is perfect for people that love self-aware, and self-deprecating, humor.
