One of the best things about this golden age of television is that you no longer need to wait until fall for your favorite shows to return. Nowadays television series are constantly starting and stopping; getting picked up and finally wrapping up. No more Summer doldrums, just solid television every day, all year.
For the month of January, there’s a slew of new TV shows premiering and old favorites returning, and the best part about it is that you don’t need cable to tune in. Here’s a look at some of the best shows and specials premiering this month on broadcast and streaming television.
**All times are EST**
Hunted, 10 PM, CBS – January 22
Billed as one of the most elaborate games of hide and seek in the world, Hunted is a reality show that takes nine teams of two and drops them in the Southeastern United States. Their mission? Evade capture for 28 days as they try to avoid a team of highly skilled investigators. Their prize? $250,000.
Quantico, 10 PM, ABC – January 23
Returning for its third season is the hit ABC series Quantico. In this thrilling action series, you follow the lives of a diverse and sexy group of young government agents in training. Everyone has their secrets, everyone has their motivations; but is everyone who they say they are? You’ll have to tune in to find out.
Frontline: Trump’s Road to the Whitehouse, 10 PM, PBS – January 24
Whether you love him or hate him, one thing you have to admit is that his rise to power was unexpected and unprecedented. Join the critically acclaimed Frontline team as they walk you through and dissect Donald Trump’s historic ascendancy to the presidency; which many see as either the start of something great or beginning of the end.
Voltron: Legendary Defender, Netflix – January 20
Get ready to crank the nostalgia up to an 11 as Netflix brings back the cult classic TV show Voltron for a new generation. Like the previous version, Voltron is a show about a group of teenagers transported from Earth to become pilots of giant robots that can combine to become an even bigger giant robot. It’s flashy and fun for the whole family.
Frontier, Netflix – January 20
Once the kids go on to bed, do yourself a favor and check out Frontier. Starring Jason Momoa, best known as Aquaman and Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones, as the outlaw Declan Harp; the show centers around the bloody business behind the fur trade in the 1700s. It may sound mundane, but trust me when I say the fur trade is a shade more violent that you might think.
The Path, Hulu – January 25
Returning for its second season is the hit series The Path. Starring former Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul, The Path centers around a man named Eddie Lane, a member of a cult who is starting to have a crisis of faith. It mind not sound as enthralling as giant robots, but the deft writing and interesting take on faith and family is enough to keep you coming back for more.
